KEY = PLANNING

Anderson Law Office March 23, 2026

When it comes to alcohol, a little planning goes a long way in keeping you and others safe. It is imperative to plan how you get home from your evening out. If you stick with your plan and refuse to drive or be in control of a vehicle after you’ve had drinks it is nearly impossible to get a DUI.

Drinking isn’t what gets you in trouble, driving after you’ve drank alcohol is the issue.  The key is planning and then refusing to deviate from your plan.

With more than 2,500 successfully defended DUI cases of experience in the Twin Cities, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly a night out can turn into a life-changing situation. Here are a few simple reminders that can help prevent problems before they start:

• Plan your ride ahead of time.

Arrange a sober driver, take a cab, Uber, schedule a rideshare, or decide as a group how you’re getting home before you start drinking. It is also wise not to drive to the event. If you didn’t drive, obviously, you can’t get in your care and drive home. You can also plan to stay at a hotel, or a friend’s house.

• Know your limits.

Pacing yourself, eating beforehand, and drinking water throughout the night can keep things manageable.

• Look out for friends.

If someone with you shouldn’t be driving, step in. A quick conversation can prevent a serious accident or DUI.

Key Planning

If a DUI does occur:

Stay calm, be respectful, and remember that you still have important rights. You are required to provide your name, driver’s license, and insurance information — but you do NOT have to answer potentially incriminating questions. You also have the right to speak with an attorney before making decisions about testing.

If you or someone you care about is facing a DUI, the earlier you get legal help, the better your options often are. I’m here to guide you through the process and protect your rights every step of the way.
